Newsletter – 2010 Winter

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
At Specialized Saddles we want to wish everyone a happy new year. We have grown and moved into a new larger factory in Anthony, New Mexico, which is just across the Texas state line and just north of El Paso, Texas.
We now have seat sizes for larger riders, which includes the western seat sizes 18 and 20 and our extra-wide trees for really wide horses.

Our new plaid western pads are in stock. We look forward to working with you, our valued customers, to build the saddle of your dreams. If you do not see exactly what you are looking for, contact me to discuss our custom options.

We have a new flat seat cutback english show saddle (on the right) and other new saddles in the testing pipeline.

SADDLE – FIT FOR THE RIDER
In the past few years, more and more people have become aware of the importance of saddle fit.

However, not as much attention has been given to fit and comfort for the rider. If the horseback experience is to be enjoyed to its fullest, a good fit for the rider is almost as important as fit for the horse.

I often talk about the three dimensions of saddle fit for the horse. Those are width, arch, and angle. Two of these, width and arch, have a lot to do with comfort for the rider also. We used our computer pressure pad system to examine saddle fit and the pressure on a rider’s seat. Some very interesting information emerged. Read the complete article here

BLAKE & ARI WIN AERC NATIONAL STALLION AWARD FOR ENDURANCE IN 2009
Blake Potter is Specialized Saddles general manager. He is also an avid endurance rider. Blake rode FLF go Flight Leader (Ari) to become winner of 2009 national AERC mileage Champion stallion, (Jim Jones award winner). Ari is owned by David and Tracy Kaden, Specialized Saddles Owners.

This was Ari’s first year of endurance and he completed over 1,000 miles in competition.
What an accomplishment for a young horse, carrying a heavy weight rider. Saddle Fit is such a big part of this success!! Congratulations to Blake and Ari !!

IN THE MEDIA
Look for an upcoming show about Specialized Sadddles on Dish Network Channel 9411 in late February on the Wayne Williams “Speaking of Horses” TV show on Saturday and Sunday.

Specialized Riders Finish at the WEG Endurance Championship!!
American Endurance Team member Deborah Reich, using a Specialized International Saddle, finished the 100 mile race, this past Sunday In Lexington KY. Unfortunately, she was the ONLY American Rider to finish. Team Japan rider Chikako Nishiyama also finished, riding an International Model Specialized Saddle also, and she too, was the only member of her team to finish the 100 mile event..

Interestingly both riders were the only members of their respective teams to use Specialized Saddles, and both finished. Proof again, better saddle fit results in better performance. Blake Potter, Specialized factory manager attended the event, and checked the fit for competitors using Specialized Saddles, as part of our commitment to customer service, at this world championship.

SADDLE FIT STUDY

The New Mexico State University (NMSU) study of western saddle fit is now available at the link below. This study utilized a computer pressure pad to precisely evaluate over 200 horse saddle combinations. Highlights of the study included the revelation that over 84% of roping and barrel saddles tested were bridging. Also approximately 50% have excessive pressures over 3.6 psi, which can damage back tissue, caused by improper fit and associated reduced surface area contact of the bars to horse’s back.

Bridging is usually caused by the saddle not being wide enough, to fit both the horse and padding being used. To learn more about the relationship of padding see “The Pad Paradox’ in the Specialized web site (www.specializedsaddles.com) under “news and more info” toolbar.

One day David Kaden, owner of Specialized and TW Saddles, attended a NMSU scanning session with some TW western saddles, and refit eight horses who had very bad scans with their traditional western saddles. Using his adjustable saddles, the students rescanned these eight, and seven of them or 87% changed from bad to good scans when fitted with the new adjustable western saddles. The other horse, was too wide to fit the standard tree on the TW Saddles David brought. He said his extra wide model, which was out on demo, would have accommodated the very wide horse, making it 100% perfect saddle fit on problem horses. But 87% was pretty remarkable improvement.

Because a TW or Specialized Saddle has the padding BUILT INTO the saddle and width is adjustable bridging is not a common problem and is easily fixed if it exists.

STANDARD COLOR CHANGED!
We are changing our standard leather color from chestnut to brown. This light brown goes well with all color horses and seat colors. In discussions with our users, we found that brown is more poplar. It is our goal to offer the most beautiful saddle possible, thus the change. Let us know if you have questions or comments so that we can continue to improve our saddles!

BIG NEWS – WESTERN SADDLES
We are proud to announce two upcoming western saddle improvements.

  1. New wider trees will be standard without the extra tree charge and western pommels will not cost extra. This will help accommodate the increasing number of quarter horses and thicker padding used by western horsemen.
  2. We will be offering a new line of western performance saddles including saddles made for barrel racing, roping, and other specific western disciplines. These will be offered on a new web site, Western Specialized Saddles. This site should be up in four to six weeks. Specialized Saddles will be expanding our manufacturing capabilities to keep pace with this growing product line.

NMSU SADDLE FIT STUDY COMPLETE
Approximately two hundred western saddles of all brands were examined; especially barrel and roping saddles by students at the University of New Mexico’s Ag marketing team in Las Cruces NM using an FSA pressure pad. Padding thickness, weight of rider and discipline of use were categorized.

63% of all saddles tested had unacceptable levels of pressures exceeding 3.6 psi (a level, which can cause tissue damage due to loss of blood flow.) Also bridging and pressure along spine and withers due to thick padding and not enough clearance under pommel were very common causes of saddle fit problems.

Interestingly, a limited number of horses exhibiting bad scans were refit with an adjustable Specialized Saddle. 87% of horses with unacceptable pressure changed to good scans, after being retested with a western Specialized Saddle and pad.

For more info of the relationship of padding to saddle fit see the article Pad Paradox on our web site HERE. More details of this study will be posted on the web site soon…
